The Train...and Other Tracks

... was recorded in the blissful, cool summer evenings of June 2001 with the aid of my good friend John Robinson. Despite the fact that we had to suspend recording for a while until a close neighbour had finished hammering panels back onto his fence that a spring wind had blown down, the tracks on this CD are of a startling professional clarity. I would like to take this opportunity to offer John my grateful thanks for his efforts in that direction.

Several of the tracks on this compilation, notably - 'The Train', 'Bomber's Moon', 'Annie', and 'Nan's' - have been produced for BBC Radio Sheffield, performed by myself, with the singular exception of 'The Comer' which was  produced for BBC Radio Gloucester and read by the actress Bryony King.

I hope this personal selection displays a capacity for unearthing the wealth of human emotion lying untapped beneath the surface of seemingly commonplace items; as in 'Tick Tock, said The Penguin', and in 'Bomber's Moon' where it seems there's more than tea to be found in a teapot.

Delve deep into a personal sense of loss and uncertainty in 'The Train', 'Annie', and 'The Rocket Home' before following me through the humorous twists and turns of 'Fishing' and 'The Comer' to the dangerously inventive 'Obtuse' and 'Vox Humana' before arriving safely, if a little changed by the experience, down to earth with 'The Journey Back'

The style of this personal selection ranges from the outright poetic to lyrical prose, but hopefully always with the same sense of purpose and rhythm. These selected recordings are intended to maintain a driving narrative that will carry the listener along like 'The Train'...

" ...in a pocket of sun, like a piece of the day, as if we'd never left, in the wake of a funeral pyre..."

In my writing, as in life, I strive to walk through doors into the unexpected and into emotions that we all possess but experience all too infrequently, with the same unashamedly purposeful stride.

This is not an easy journey...

Get your ticket clipped...

Breathe in the heady scent of spent coal...

Put your feet up on the opposite seat.... (no 25 fine here...)

Be entertained....

And remember...

'there's always a piece of chocolate on the mantle...'
